Summer Camp
Vanilla Beans Summer Camp focuses on foods from the regions of America and from around the world. We sample, enjoy and learn how to prepare a variety of vibrant, healthy dishes from many different cuisines, using only the finest, freshest ingredients.
Our first day begins with a planning session in order to generate the week’s shopping list. This is followed by a guided shopping trip for ingredients and behind the scenes look at the Swarthmore Co-op. Upon return, the students prepare several appetizers which they will enjoy for lunch.
On the following days, students will not only prepare complete meals from different cultural cuisines, but they will also learn: cooking techniques (and tips!), the science of food, napkin folding, table setting, garnishing, proper table etiquette, serving and clearing and “plating like a pro.” Each day will end with the students dining on the fruits of their labor and creativity.
On Fridays, the children will be encouraged to invite a special adult guest to enjoy the lunch they have prepared. This lunch will be served at 12:00.
For the advanced campers!
Students with solid experience in the kitchen, including knife skills, will be given the challenge of creating their own recipes which they will prepare under Debbie and Carrie’s guidance each day.
