Vanilla Beans began with two women who share not only a friendship, but a common love for delicious, beautiful and natural food. Carrie and Debbie have been friends for years. They have spent countless hours casually sharing their thoughts about children's eating habits, great recipes and delicious food. Not long ago, when Debbie and Carrie were talking, they realized that the friendship they had developed combined with their shared love of cooking and baking would naturally lead to a perfect business relationship. And in fact, it has! Now Vanilla Beans is offering countless Tasting Possibilities to children and adults with their classes, camps and bakery.

Carrie Shankweiler, a former multiage elementary school teacher, has been cooking with children for over ten years. Her experience with kids in the kitchen began in her classroom with a multi-generational, cross-cultural weekly program where children shared precious family recipes with their classmates. Through the program, they explored family history, geography, foreign language, math, science, and nutritional awareness. Since then, children have been Cooking With Carrie in her own kitchen every week, creating beautiful and delicious food masterpieces! Over the last seven years, Carrie has become keenly aware of our nation’s poor eating habits, particularly with regards to children. Carrie values the time she spends with children knowing how she can help them become better aware of their own food choices and the difference those choices will make in the quality of their lives. Carrie can also be seen as the cooking host, cooking with kids on Comcast’s Activity TV.

Debbie Sloman is a long-time resident of Media, PA. She is the owner of By Request, Inc., a unique catering company providing beautifully prepared gourmet creations to Swarthmore College events and private parties throughout Delaware County. For over twenty years, Debbie has enjoyed teaching both children and adults the joys of preparing and serving beautiful food. Friends and colleagues regularly seek Debbie’s expertise when faced with any food challenge. For Debbie, food is love. One of Debbie’s trademark skills is whipping up a gourmet feast in under an hour. She knows the power of providing nourishment when most people are too busy and involved to provide healthy and delicious meals for themselves. Her fearless approach to cooking inspires even the most timid to walk into a kitchen with confidence.
